Why I Left the Gym and Workout at Home

Why not just get a gym membership?

This is a question I’m asked a lot. I have a few different answers, but for the last year the answer has been “because there’s a pandemic, and I can get just as good of a workout in my own living room!”

I stopped going to the gym for many reasons, but first let me tell you what it was like for me at the gym.

I was never self-conscious or embarrassed at the gym. People go there to get in a good workout, get sweaty, and feel good. Or, they go to do very little, and take lots of selfies for the Internet. Either way, most people are too much into themselves to pay attention to what I’m doing. How I looked or what I did was never a problem for me. 

For a while I had a personal trainer, which was AMAZING for lots of reasons, but ultimately at that point in my life it wasn’t a cost I could maintain. I did learn A LOT, especially about how to push myself, and grow in my own workouts instead of just maintaining. When I met with my trainer, we were at a different gym than the one I would go to after work. 

Which brings me to my next point. I love working out in the morning to get my day going, but the whole process of “the gym” in the morning before work was a process I didn’t like for my morning routine. So I would go after work, after a full day of mental and physical energy, and I never had the motivation to go. It was either I get up super early, get ready for the gym, pack all my food for the day as well as my work clothes and means of cleaning myself up and taking it all in with me, or pack my workout things and go after work. So going after a full work day was the easiest, but not my ideal time for working out. My body CRAVES it in the morning! 

(Additional thing added at the end of writing this – with CoVid, being able to work at home has been so helpful during this time! I’m still able to get that workout in, and not have to worry about social distancing, if others cleaned the machines they used, and having to workout with a mask on!)

Another thing – the gym is literally on my way to/from work. It is on the street that goes directly from work to my street, and I would still make split decisions to not go. I had no reason to not go inside, except that I wasn’t motivated. I would do myself a disservice by not going in and getting that workout in, but I just knew it wasn’t for me. But if it wasn’t for me, then what was? I was pretty active anyway with hiking and cycling. I wasn’t a couch potato, but I wasn’t benefiting from not going. Except in that I could get home faster to eat and do whatever else I wanted for the evening. 

But, it wasn’t my “thing.” I wasn’t feeling inspired there. I didn’t feel like I was getting much out of my workouts. Should’t a workout be a time not only for going through the routine, but feeling good about what I’m doing, what I’m accomplishing, and all the other effects it’ll have on me like an endorphin release? I wasn’t feeling much of this at all. 

So I turned to Beachbody for at-home workouts. It has been PERFECT for me. It allows me to workout in my living room with a certified trainer, there are lots of programs to choose from, and it fits perfectly into my ideal morning routine! It has been the best decision I’ve made for my health – ever! And yes, I am a part of Beachbody as a coach (don’t worry, this is 100% not a phishing post), but I signed up for the discounts, because I also wanted to take advantage of the nutrition aspects they offer. 3 things in particular. The first two being the pre and post workout powders. The pre is plant based, so it doesn’t have all those chemicals most other preworkout powders have, which is something I’m passionate about! The post workout comes in whey and plant protein options, so I always get the plant based. The third thing is the daily nutrition shake! Its not a protein shake, however it does have protein in it. This ALSO comes in a vegan option, which is what I always get (and so many flavor options too!). I drink it shaken up with coconut water, or blended into a shake with veggies, almond milk, peanut butter, etc. So yummy. 

I was taking control of my nutrition while also getting to work out in the ways that I wanted, that made me happy, motivated, and excited to get up when my alarm went off each morning! I can say that this month marks 2 years of this, and I have never been happier or healthier! Weight and nutrition is always fluctuating, no one is perfect, but I love my body, and I love that I’ve found a way to live a healthy lifestyle without “going to the gym” being a part of my schedule.

Being fit and healthy is so important to me, because I want to live a long, healthy, adventurous life! I want to be out on the trails, climbing walls, and traveling all over the world, and I need a body that can carry me through this dream life of mine. 

Some people get a lot out of going to the gym. It just isn’t for me. I’m also enjoying building up my little home gym!
